The Australian Olive Association has said it will receive $200,000 in Federal Government grants and will earmark the monies for “a high profile marketing campaign”. The new grant comes on the back of around $300,000 in grants provided to the AOA in recent years. Attracting Federal funding is a good result by the AOA and a real positive for all involved in the olive industry, but how is this money best spent?

02/07/2009: UK in love with olive oil
Britons are spending record amounts on olive oil, according to recent data from market analysts Nielsen. The report says sales have topped £150 million in the UK a year for the first time. That is double the amount sold eight years ago and significantly more than the £90 million spent on vegetable oil. Growing evidence of the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet is behind the trend. Half of UK homes now use olive oil compared with just 35% in 2001.

05/02/2010: Rains dampen outlook for Queensland harvest
Things had been looking pretty good for Queensland olivegrowers prior to Christmas 2009. Flooding across northern Australia mainly occurred towards the south east corner and south western areas of the state, thankfully missing the bulk of Queensland's olive groves west of the great dividing range. While rainfall certainly filled dams, it wasn't torrential like that which hit growers in northern New South Wales.

The benefits provided by olives just keep on increasing. Research has revealed that olive extracts derived from the wastewater of olive oil processing act as natural meat preservatives, due to the high levels of antioxidants present.
