The Australian and New Zealand
Olive Industry Directory

Olive product diversification on the increase

Table olives have been one of the most significant growth areas for both the Australian and New Zealand olive industries over the past five years. Statistics gathered for the Olive Industry Directory show listings for Australian table olive producers have almost doubled since the inaugural 2006 edition, growing from 192 in 2006 to 372 in 2011, while New Zealand listings have increased by 150%, growing from 14 in 2006 to 35 in 2011. The trend reflects both the growing consumer demand for locally-grown table olives, and the currently low market price for olive oil.

Other statistics and information in regard to table olives include:

> Table olive production in Australia continues to grow steadily, with a 5.08% increase in 2011 (354 in 2010 to 372 in 2011).

> More than 40% of Australian producers who contributed to the 2011 Directory statistics indicated that they produce table olives.

> New South Wales continues to have the largest number of table olive producers (29.57% of Australian listings), however Victoria is now very close behind (27.69%), accounting for 44.44% of the increase in listings.

> Table olive production in New Zealand remained unchanged from 2010, with 35 growers indicating they produce table olives.

> Statistics for tonnes of olives pickled in Australia also show an increase, with listings of respondents indicating they pickle olives up 7.8% (from 201 in 2010 to 216 in 2011). New Zealand statistics show little change from 2010.

> The industry remains dominated by boutique operations pickling less than 6 tonnes of olives, making up 76.39% of Australian listings and 86.67% of New Zealand listings.

Other notable statistics in The Directory include:

> Victoria (214) continues to have the largest number of olive growers, followed by New South Wales (193). Victoria also had the greatest rate of growth over the past year, at 10.88%.

> Information provided for the 2011 Olive Industry Directory indicates a slowing in the growth of producers making olive cosmetics over the past 12 months, with only 3 additional listings (up 4.28%, compared with 16.66% growth in 2010).

> The majority of Australian and New Zealand producers continue to sell most or all their product within domestic markets. Just 12.87% of Australian Directory listings are involved in export, along with 25% their New Zealand counterparts.

> 2011 figures indicate an overall continuing decrease in olive export involvement, with Australian involvement in particular less than that of 2008.
